Start with your passport and visa
Entry requirements depend on your nationality and travel purpose. Apply through official Pakistani channels and make sure your passport validity and visa conditions cover the full journey. Do not rely on social media screenshots or old forum posts for immigration rules.
Official starting points include the Pakistan Online Visa System and the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports.
Check your own government travel advice
Travel advice differs by nationality and can change quickly. Travellers from the United States should review the latest Pakistan information from the U.S. Department of State. British travellers should review the latest FCDO guidance. Canadian, Australian, European and other travellers should use the official travel advisory service of their own government.
These advisories can include warnings about particular provinces, border regions, demonstrations, security conditions and insurance implications. Your final route should take current advice and local conditions into account.
Understand permits, registrations and NOCs
Most ordinary tourism does not mean applying for an NOC everywhere. However, some sensitive or restricted areas can require advance permission, local registration, security coordination or a No Objection Certificate. Requirements can apply near borders, in certain districts, around sensitive installations, or for specific trekking and mountaineering activities.
Current official travel guidance notes that advance permission can be required for travel in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Foreign visitors to Gilgit-Baltistan can also face local registration requirements, while higher mountain expeditions and some trekking activities may require permits.

Travellers visiting Nankana Sahib, Kartarpur Sahib, Panja Sahib and Lahore should confirm the current entry, corridor and site access arrangements before travel. The best itinerary depends on how you are entering Pakistan, your visa status, your available days and whether you want to add other parts of Punjab or northern Pakistan.
Choose accommodation for the route, not only the rating
In major cities, international travellers have a wide range of hotel choices. In mountain areas, the best option is often the property that gives reliable road access, sensible check-in timing and the right level of comfort for the next day of travel. Standards and availability can change with the season.
Stay connected and keep documents accessible
Keep digital and physical copies of your passport, visa, insurance and key booking details. Share your itinerary with a trusted contact. Mobile coverage can be limited in remote valleys, so do not assume constant connectivity.
Respect local rules and culture
Pakistan is culturally diverse. Dress and behaviour that are appropriate in a major city may need to be more conservative at religious sites or in rural communities. Follow local instructions about photography, security checkpoints and restricted locations. Avoid demonstrations and political gatherings.
Travel insurance matters
Choose insurance that fits your actual itinerary, including the regions and activities you plan to visit. If you are trekking or travelling to remote mountain areas, check whether evacuation and altitude-related activities are covered.
